Movie Title: Young Adult
Film Critic: Goher Iqbal Punn
Director: Jason ReitmanCast: Charlize Theron, Patrick Wilson and Patton Oswalt
Writer: Diablo Cody
Genre: Comedy
Runtime: 94 minutes

Jason Reitman’s latest flick, ‘Young Adult’ hits the screens all over. Jason teams up with the script writer Diablo Cody to chew up this enterprise to entertain the audiences but the question is that whether the duo succeeds in alluring the viewers, who are intelligent and understand the flaws and the difference between a bad or average and unblemished product, to the fullest? Well, lets’ judge so!

The team of Jason Reitman and Diablo Cody had previously brought us ‘Juno’ now they churns out ‘Young Adult’, flick that centers Charlize Theron from tip to toe. Charlize does the convincing act but the script of the movie and direction lack to raise the spirits of the cinegoers.

The film stars Charlize Theron, Patrick Wilson and Patton Oswalt in the pivotal characters but it’s Charlize show all the way.

The concept of the movie revolves around a woman who is divorced and works as a fiction writer. She returns to her native land, the small town of Minnesota when she learns that her ex-beau is having a kid with wife. She wants to reunite with him.

Mavis Gary (Charlize Theron) is a divorced woman who resides in a muddled apartment in Minneapolis. She is a ghostwriter and pens a coveted teen novel series. By the time, she explores about her high school flame Buddy’s (Patrick Wilson) becoming papa with his wife Beth (Elizabeth Reaser), she injects the excuses inside to make her return to the land Minnesota after a long hiatus to get her high school love back. It’s like an obsession, she develops for the man.  What happens next and what comes in her way to get at her love is what the film offers on the celluloid!

The film has been targeted as a comedy genre but rarely the viewer finds it as a comic caper. The storyline is not novel at all. We have witnessed this plot a number of times on the silver screen where you find the obsession for the lovers and the stalking happens and the things like that. There is no novelty at all. The screenplay by Diablo Cody is a big lackluster as it has its own weaknesses. When the writer and the director had put the heads together to manufacture the idea of making the flick, did they not know what they were going to produce for the audiences? Guess, the project has been made in haste.

The execution by Jason Reitman is good – no doubt in that but what the director can do when he has a mundane script in hand? The same happened with Jason in this case of ‘Young Adult’.

The cinematography is appealing – the locales have been well captured. The editing is good. The performances by the leading stars are well-delivered. Since it is Charlize Theron show, she enacts the part beautifully.
