The movie ‘Heroine’, according to the director Madhur Bhandarkar, is based on the life of an actress Mahi Khanna, played by Kareena Kapoor. The director, who is known widely for his films like’ Page 3’ and ‘Fashion’, says that the film is going to show a side of the film industry that has never been seen before. It tracks the highs and lows of the actress’ career and shows how it affects her life. Just like Madhur’s other films, this film is supposed to be a window for the common man to view the depths of Bollywood. It will show how the industry works and what it secrets are. It is no surprise that there were number of rumours that said that the character of Mahi and the movie is based on the lives of famous actress’. Some of the names that came up were Marilyn Monroe, Madhubala etc. However, the director has rejected all these claims and said that ‘Heroine’ is going to be his ‘Magnum Opus’.

Going by the director’s immense dedication and preparation for this film, we can easily say that it is one project that is very close to his heart. In fact, Bhandarkar himself has admitted that he was mentally preparing himself to make ‘Heroine’ ever since his arrival in Bollywood. To make the film absolutely perfect, he has done a documentary on legendary actresses like Vivian Leigh, Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, Ava Gardner etc. This has helped him to understand the rise and fall of these famous personalities better. He even got his lead actors to go for workshops so that they can familiarise themselves with the characters. Madhur even bought the rights from Guddu Dhanoa, so that he could name this film ‘Heroine’. The thought and idea of it had come to him even in 2010. Though at that point, he had decided to focus his attention on ‘Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Jee’ rather than this project.

If you thought that the fact that this film is special to the director makes it interesting, then you have more reason to think so. As the word goes round, Madhur had earlier offered his films ‘Fashion’ and ‘Page 3’ to Kareena. But for some reason the actress was not comfortable with the idea of doing these films. After this, for ‘Heroine’ Madhur had cast Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Everything was fixed, and then suddenly came the news that shocked the Bollywood Fans. Aishwarya has announced that she is indeed pregnant. Following this, she left Madhur’s film, forcing him to look for an actress who was worthy of taking her place. This is where Kareena Kapoor stepped in. After rejecting the first two, looks like this project finally found favour with this successful actress.

The point to be mentioned here is that the news about this movie was first formally declared by then director and Aishhwarya at the Cannes Film festival at that time, it was stated that the role had been written keeping the very famous star in mind. The actress too had shown interest in going ahead with the project. Arjun Rampal was cast opposite her. The director went as far as declaring that Arjun would be seen in an avatar that the audience has never seen him in before.

So, will this film be as special to the audience as it is to Madhur? Can Kareena do the job of portraying this falling and once-famous actress’ life well enough? We will have to wait till September to find out.
