A traditional harvest festival of India, Pongal is South India’s answer to the famous American holiday of Thanksgiving. Pongal occurs in mid January every year and denotes the Sun’s northward journey. According to Hindus, Pongal also marks the end of winter and is considered the beginning of an auspicious period. Being one of the oldest Hindu celebrations, Pongal festivities have remained more or less the same over all these years. Making Pongal with the first paddy that is harvested, decorating houses with beautiful kolam patterns using rice paste, enjoying various sweet dishes and flaunting new clothes are intrinsic to Pongal celebrations.

Even though Pongal started out as an essentially village festival, rapid urbanization changed the Pongal celebrations considerably. Eventually, there was a gradual touch of the contemporary in the Pongal festivities. This was true of the outfits worn on Pongal too. Even though the Pavada Davani or theHalf Saree,as it is popularly known, remains the most sought after Indian outfit for Pongal, there is certainly a noticeable difference in the way Pavada Davanis have evolved over the years. What used to be simple a simple Pavada Davani or aHalf Sareeexcept for a minimal touch of trimmings such as lace is now more of ethnic and gorgeous attire meant to be an exclusive style statement for the occasion. Today, Pavada Davanis flaunt lustrous zari woven intricate patterns similar to gorgeous SilkSarees. Moreover, inspired byDesignerSarees, a whole new variety ofDesigner Half Sareeshave also eventually emerged.Designer Half Sareesusually reveal the use of different fabrics other than the traditional silks. They are usually made of georgettes and chiffons along with a touch of embellishments such as sequins, beads, zardozi, zari embroidery, etc. The SilkHalf Sareesare indeed classic, but it’s a good idea to opt for something little different this Pongal which would prove to be a pleasant surprise for onlookers!
