LONDON: Former Australia captain Steve Waugh has said 56 players reported illegal approaches by bookmakers to the International Cricket Council (ICC) last year, compared to just five players in 2009.

Waugh has controversially called for players to take lie-detector tests in a bid to root out corruption from cricket and wants to discuss his proposal with the ICC’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit. The 46-year-old Waugh, a member of the world cricket committee of Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), the guardian of the sport’s laws, has submitted to a polygraph examination himself. Waugh also called for lifetime bans for captains involed in corruption.
